TDOT Completes I-440 Reconstruction – The Largest in its History – Ahead of Schedule
The Tennessee Department of Transportation allowed drivers to get to their destinations more quickly and efficiently, thanks to the $154.8 million I-440 Reconstruction Project. The project features a new asphalt roadway which replaces the deteriorated concrete, three travel lanes in each direction plus auxiliary lanes, new lighting, new color overhead message boards, new landscaping, and ramp safety improvements at the 21st Avenue and Murphy Avenue exits.
Using the Design-Build method allowed for complete design and construction of the project in less than two years and did not include total closures of the interstate. It was completed in July 2020, one month ahead of schedule.
“The I-440 project is a perfect example of the importance of investing in our infrastructure,” Governor Bill Lee said. “This roadway is a vital part of Nashville and Middle Tennessee’s transportation system, and it will now be capable of serving this community for decades to come.”
Additional lanes, new pavement, improved lighting, ITS enhancements, and removal of the elevated median have made this vital Nashville corridor safer and more efficient for motorists.
“The I-440 Reconstruction Project is not only the largest in TDOT’s history, but also one of the most challenging to construct,” Commissioner Bright said. “I want to commend the entire project team for their hard work and dedication to meeting the aggressive completion date. I also want to thank the public for their patience during the construction process.”
The I-440 Reconstruction Project was one of 962 critical transportation projects included in the 2017 IMPROVE Act legislation.
