Little Heaven Grade Separated Interchange

In August 2019, the Delaware Department of Transportation marked the completion of a nearly four year, $44 million project covering more than 650 acres to increase safety on the heavily traveled State Route 1 that eliminated the last remaining traffic signals on the roadway in Kent County. In its previous configuration, the intersection caused lengthy backups on Route 1 during summertime beach traffic while exposing local turning traffic to the risk of side-impact crashes.

Route 1 now crosses over the previous intersection, allowing traffic to continue north and south without stopping, while pedestrian and local traffic are maintained on the new ramps and service roads. Additionally, six other intersections were eliminated as part of the project.
