Mississippi DOT Addresses Rapid Growth in Flowood with Expansion Project

Flowood, Mississippi, has been one of the fastest-growing areas in the Jackson-Metro over the past 20 years. Between 1990 and 2010, the population of Rankin County increased by 62.5 percent and the Flowood population increased by 173.5 percent. This type of rapid growth put a strain on the area’s existing transportation infrastructure, such as State Route 25/Lakeland Drive.

In the fall of 2015, Mississippi DOT broke ground on the $36.3 million Lakeland Drive Expansion Project. The project added an additional northbound and southbound lane, upgraded all traffic signals to new fiber-optic connected signals and rehabilitated existing travel lanes. Major intersections along the corridor were also widened to accommodate the increased traffic volume.

Completed in December 2017, MDOT’s expansion project allows drivers to spend less time sitting in congestion while also keeping the business community happy with better traffic flow for customers.
