MoDOT Safety Design-Build Project

The Missouri Department of Transportation integrated low-cost safety improvements into 31 different projects – helping save lives across the region.

MoDOT oversees the 7th-largest highway system in the country. Rather than chase accident locations around the state to develop projects to address the serious injuries and fatalities, it needed a new, more innovative solution.

Enter the data-driven $24.11 million Safety Design-Build Improvement Project, which combined the expertise and experience of the department, engineering firms, and construction companies – along with the latest research – to put together a project’s safety requirements. This included the development of tools and a scoring system to optimize the safety-cost benefit of projects across the St. Louis region, helping the department prioritize safety without maximizing the cost. Construction began in the summer of 2017 and was completed midway through 2019.
