Completing the Loop: Interstate 269 Construction in Mississippi
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) began work on the $612 million Interstate 269 project back in 2011; a project that consisted of 26 miles of four-lane, controlled-access highway through DeSoto and Marshall counties in northwest Mississippi. The growth in traffic was putting a strain on the local roads, with both counties seeing a major population boom over the last 30 years, as well as being a main route to the Memphis airport. In order to address this, MDOT installed 11 digital message boards, 71 traffic cameras, and other components to give travelers real-time traffic information and travel time estimates; helping them to stay informed to make the best possible travel decision.
The end result has vastly improved the quality of life for the community – adding more than 1,400 jobs, providing numerous opportunities for community development, and helping to grow the state’s economy.
