Brookville Interchange Brings Great Change for Residents

The city of Brookville is enjoying a new bridge along I-70 thanks to a recent ODOT project. The $5.5 million dollar project at Arlington Road and I-70 addressed bridge deck deterioration and substandard under bridge clearance. It also created a pedestrian walkway and a center left-turn lane for improved safety. These improvements made the interchange more adaptable to future traffic needs and development. Construction kicked off in late 2017 and was completed in the fall of 2018.

Project contractor, Brumbaugh Construction, replaced the bridge deck over Interstate 70. The bridge was widened to include a center turn lane, along with the through lanes in each direction. The structure was also raised for better clearance and a vandal fence was replaced. Safety was a main focus throughout construction. ODOT even utilized ramps for detour purposes over I-70 in place of 15-minute total closures to keep traffic flowing.

ODOT worked closely with the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission and the city of Brookville to make sure this project met all of their needs. Brookville had a lot of input on design elements as aesthetics were very important since this interchange is a gateway into the city. They worked closely with ODOT and the design consultant, Woolpert. This partnership was crucial to a successful outcome.

This project won several awards including the ODOT/OCA Don Conaway Partnering Award 2019, the International Partnering Institute Award 2019 and a Community Acceptance Award. The key to success was the inclusion of the city of Brookville as a main stakeholder. ODOT also conducted routine meetings, public involvement, and comprehensive design reviews. “All of these efforts improved communication moving forward and ensured everyone got the outcome they desired,” said ODOT Construction Project Engineer Jackie Nicol. This was a true team effort and the results speak for themselves.
