Wando Bridge

In May 2018, following weekly inspections of the James B. Edwards bridge—known to natives of the area as the Wando River bridge—a failure of post-tensioning cables was detected causing an immediate closure of the Westbound lanes of the bridge and impacting 35,000 commuters in the bustling region.

Within 48-hours, South Carolina Department of Transportation traffic engineers rerouted traffic to keep the rapidly growing Charleston area from coming to a standstill. Thanks to the critical support of federal partners, SCDOT was able to program $5.4M in infrastructure funding to have the bridge accepting normal traffic patterns within less than one month.
