Heavy Haul Transportation Corridor Expansion in Clark County
The Indiana Department of Transportation is finalizing a truck corridor that is supporting the expansion of local economic activity in Clark County in southern Indiana.
The second and final section of roadway making up the Heavy Haul Transportation Corridor is currently under construction in Clark County, Indiana. Upon completion, the corridor will provide a continuous route for heavy haul vehicles between River Ridge Commerce Center and the Port of Indiana at Jeffersonville via a two-lane roadway and a new bridge over Lentzier Creek.
Freight traffic surged in the area following the opening of the East End Crossing in December 2016, which connects the east side of Louisville, Kentucky, with southern Indiana. The first section of the corridor opened in 2017 between State Road 265 and River Ridge. The final section will open in late 2021 and complete the connection to the port, providing quicker and easier access for large trucks hauling freight. Several groups were involved in the development of the overall project, including the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, Ports of Indiana, Kentuckiana Regional and Development Agency, Clark County, Jeffersonville Redevelopment Commission, and River Ridge Development Authority. The finished route will help meet the current needs and future demands of expanding commercial and industrial development in the region and eliminate mixing an increasing number of heavy haul vehicles with local traffic on nearby roads.
