West Lake Corridor
The Indiana Department of Transportation is investing in a public transportation project that is expected to support thousands of jobs and spur significant private investment in Northwest Indiana.
The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District has launched construction on the state’s largest public transit investment in Indiana history – expanding commuter rail service from the West Lake Corridor to Chicago. The West Lake Corridor expands the South Shore Line with a new eight-mile line extending from Hammond on the north to Dyer on the south and connects high growth areas of Lake County, IN with downtown Chicago. The nearly $1 billion project includes four new stations: a Gateway station in north Hammond, a station at 173rd street in Hammond, a station at Ridge Road in Munster, and a station at the border of Munster and Dyer off of Main Street. Additionally, a new maintenance facility will be built in north Hammond. The West Lake Corridor will create approximately 1,000 well-paying construction jobs and result in $2.3 billion in private investment and 6,000 new jobs in Northwest Indiana over the next 30 years. Construction is expected to finish in late 2024 with passenger service starting in early 2025.
